The 400 free relay

“Parties in the USA”!

The Yorktown swimmers once again demonstrated what hard work throughout a swim season can do for their performance as almost every individual improved upon their time between prelims and finals on Saturday at Hamilton Southeastern.

The Tiger men advanced three individuals and two relays to the state meet next weekend. The 200 medley relay (1:39.82) and 400 free relay (3:15.76) - both comprised of Cameron Watters, Austin Dunn, Adam Voss and Michael Heavilon - achieved state cuts finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The boys shaved off one and a half seconds from each race to achieve this feat and had a good time doing so as they marched in as the number one seed in the 400 free relay to Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA” wearing tall American hats and waving flags.

Cameron Watters not only achieved a state cut in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.09, but also established a new school record in doing so. He swam to a 9th place finish in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:02.83.

Austin Dunn fell just shy of the state standard on his 50 freestyle, though he swam a lifetime best (22.05), but his time was fast enough to be called down to Indianapolis to round out the 32 swimmer field. He also finished fourth in the 100 free with a season best time of 48.79.

Michael Heavilon put on an incredible performance in both the 200 IM (2:01.14) and 500 free (4:55.41), placing 6th and 5th respectively and posting a 3.5 second drop in the 500 between prelims and finals.

The 200 free relay team of Thommy Brown, Joe Eskew, Michael Stocker and Harrison Slater ended up 8th (1:39.77) but dropped an incredible 3.3 seconds between Thursday and Saturday.

Adam Voss successfully advanced with state cut times in both of his individual events placing 3rd in the 200 free (1:43.70) and avenging two second places finishes last year to become the sectional champion this year in the 100 butterfly in a time of 51.10 (despite his parade song – The Pokemon Theme – having technical difficulties!)

We wish all of the boys the best as they prepare for the “big show” at the IUPUI Natatorium Friday, beginning at 6:00pm.

Boy's Sectional Prelims

2/18/2010

The men from Yorktown traveled to Hamilton Southeastern Thursday night determined to equal their female counterparts in putting on an impressive show. They achieved this by having every swimmer post a season best time in the preliminary round of competition; some recording ridiculous time drops, like senior Harrison Slater who shaved 13 seconds off of his 200 freestyle.

The following swimmers qualified to return on Saturday in the sectional finals:

200 Medley Relay – Cameron Watters, Austin Dunn, Adam Voss, Michael Heavilon

200 Free – Adam Voss

200 IM – Michael Heavilon

50 Free – Austin Dunn (#1 seed)

100 Fly – Adam Voss (#1 seed)

100 Free – Austin Dunn

100 Back – Cameron Watters

400 Free Relay – Voss, Watters, Heavilon, Dunn (#1 seed)

Also advancing to the consolation heat was Cameron Watters in the 500 freestyle and the 200 free relay team of Thommy Brown, Joe Eskew, Michael Stocker and Harrison Slater.

Good luck to all of the swimmers competing at 1:00pm and the divers who begin their preliminaries at 9:00am Saturday.

Girl's State Finals

2/13/2010

Larah Beaver advanced to the consolation heat of the 100 backstroke and moved up to an 11th place finish on Saturday with a time of 57.73.

All of the girl's qualifying for the state meet are to be congratulated. We are proud of their efforts!
